A Convivial Dance
A weekend contact improvisation workshop with Karl Frost
Contact Improvisation is a 40 year old art form exploring the possibilities of
bodies moving through physical contact. In this workshop, we explore the
conviviality of contact improvisation… the interdependence and lively
togetherness of exploring the physics of two bodies in a system of mutual
support in motion. From one perspective, we place our bodies in a context
of mutual negotiation of physics. From another perspective, we together
make one interdependent system.
Our explorations are a mix of the mechanical and the sensory. On the one
hand, we explore a dance where we affect each other and are affected,
adapting to each other’s choices and playfully offering mechanical
possibilities to each other. On the other hand, we play with clear roles of
direction and following, exploring sensitive manipulation and surrender from
a place of agency. We generously affect each other and engage with the
ways we are affected. The will of the dance is shared. Can we deepen that
sense of sharing, so that we both feel it is ours? When do we feel two wills
negotiating vs one will together?
Thematic and focused explorations are mixed with supportive technical
exercise and partnering vocabulary.
We use the mind to generate intention and direction, but then surrender
thinking to be in sensation and experience.

Karl Frost
Karl Frost (www.bodyresearch.org) has been practicing and teaching contact
improvisation and related investigations since the late 1980s in California and has
shared his work in over 25 countries. He began his movement explorations in martial
arts as a teenager, before expanding his studies to somatics, contemporary dance,
contact improvisation, and experimental theater. His performance work, via his company,
Body Research Physical Theater, explores postdramatic works rooted in somatic
psychology and paratheatrical exploration and alternates between stage productions and
highly interactive performance happenings exploring audience agency and personal
meaning. He is known in contact improvisation for his articulate teaching of both
technical details and subtle body-based approaches to sensory and psychological
exploration. He has an MFA in Dramatic Arts and a PhD in Ecology, and currently works
as an anthropologist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig,
